BRAZIL - It Ain't No Ghetto Anymore

The brazilian collective who got tired of being sexy is about to blow Barcelona in December 1st, in one of their last dates of European tour. Very odd… a brazilian band touring Europe… and they’re neither Caetano Veloso, nor Sepultura.

The story began around 2003 in São Paulo, the underground capital of Brazilian culture, when the whole fotolog ‘deal’ was staring to preview a boom of servers in which you can host your profile and be a primitive version of a star. The girls started to meet by adding themselves’ profiles, exchanging e-mails, pictures and a load of excitement!… Such amazing liaison with both internet and culture had an effect on their lives, and by the end of 2003, a new band was born.

Claiming their scene was the internet, trashy pop culture and all the figures in the showbiz, they soon assumed a very controversial position with their lyrics -a song named after the heir of the Hilton empire (Meeting Paris Hilton); a love song with another band’s name on it (Let’s make love and Listen Death From Above); and Art Bitch, in which they must have had a hell of a time!-. The thing was: they were a hype, they didn’t have a name, and they had a show to play; it was essential to get one. Lovefoxxx, the singer, after trying all the names she could imagine, turned on the computer, opened an internet window, and spot it: an interview on some browser featured Beyoncé Knowles’ latest interview, with a humongous quote saying she was tired of bring sexy… What better name could come up than Cansei de Ser Sexy? As they didn’t have any intention of becoming what they are now, they all agreed it’d be a wonderful and funny name to have a good time once in a while, whenever a promoter invited them to play a gig.

It’s nothing new to see artsy fartsy people in bands. Nowadays, and due to the internet, all the bands are cool, have cool artworks, cool pictures, cool style, cool hairdos… Same with "CSS", apart from one little thing – they do it all by themselves: the videos because they studied film, the website artwork because they studied design, the lyrics because normally bands do so, but also because they had a specific background to explore and the merchandise… so on… And because of their self awareness and continuous hard working on the DIY subject – very important these days – , they would soon be the favourite target of some remarkable São Paulo’s newspapers, in which very important art critics approved their act. This opened them the doors for an outer world, where they would play side by side with Kraftwerk, Primal Scream, MC5 and The Kills, for example…

But the biggest achievement was yet to come. After releasing their first EP in "Trama Virtual", a brazilian label, they did have the intention of editing it in Europe and the USA, and in order to accomplish the task, they started sending it to labels all over the world. As any other daydreaming band, Cansei de Ser Sexy were sending their demos to every label they loved, and one of them answered the door. Precisely the legendary label of one of the most profitable bands ever – Nirvana. "CSS" were in Sub Pop! The record would be released in Europe, USA and Japan; and the girls agreed.

A tour was to follow that release, and that’s why they’re coming to Primavera Sound, in Barcelona, next December 1st. During the American tour, they shared stage with Diplo and Bonde do Rolê, a pair of brazilian acts we must pay attention to. In Europe they are playing with 1990’s and Rogers Sisters.

In three years, they have put out the record "CSS SUXX" and two singles, and although there are no news of upcoming stuff, they keep their fans well informed[1]. If it takes three years and internet to make cool stuff, then… be it!
